Tigers catcher James McCann and starting pitcher Matthew Boyd both wore cleats with the names of fallen soldiers from Michigan in Monday’s game.
McCann honored Navy Steelworker 3rd Class Luciano Montemayor, Air Force Lt. Col. Mark Jennings, Army Sgt.1st Class Shawn Suzch and Army Staff Sgt. Michael Hullender.
Wearing those cleats, McCann hit his third career grand slam home run and fourth home run of the season in the 3rd inning to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead in an eventual 9-3 win over the Angels.
McCann credited Boyd and Jordan Field, who runs the Detroit Tigers Foundation, with getting in contact with TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) to obtain the names of the fallen heroes.
